Performing Well Surveys

 Volume/Number:  2006 May
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Requirements exist in Illinois and federal regulations1 to identify potable water wells in relation to cleanup sites to ensure that water supply wells are protected by proposed cleanup remedies. Because of concerns about known inaccuracies in certain databases and instances with inadequate documentation, a more thorough approach is needed for surveys of potable water supply wells. The enhanced techniques described in this fact sheet will apply across all remedial programs and RCRA Permits in Illinois EPAs Bureau of Land. While some additional research and reporting may be required, this approach should not prove overly burdensome to the regulated community, and it will provide the level of detail necessary to make informed decisions to protect well users.

Bioremediation Guidance Leaking Underground Storage Tank Program: Use of In-Situ Slow Release Oxygen Compound Injection

 Volume/Number:  2008 September
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  The intent of the information provided is to lay a framework from which Illinois EPA can review these types of projects in a consistent manner across the Leaking Underground Storage Tank Section. This basic framework should provide enough information to form a design decision that has a reasonable chance to remediating a site. This information is provided as a guide in reviewing in-situ, slow-release oxygen compound injection proposals for groundwater remediation. This information provides a consistent approach to site investigation and design requirements for these activities.

Chemical Oxidation Guidance Leaking Underground Storage Tank Program: Use of In-Situ Chemical Oxidant Compound Injection

 Volume/Number:  2008 September
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  In-situ chemical oxidation involves the introduction of a chemical oxidant into the subsurface for the purpose of transforming contaminants in groundwater or soil into less harmful species. With sufficient contact time, oxidants are capable of converting petroleum hydrocarbons (fuels, solvents, and pesticides) into carbon dioxide and water. In many cases, chemical oxidation is chosen when bioremediation is not effective due to limited microbial growth, contaminant characteristics, or site conditions.

Use of Push-Driven Technology

 Volume/Number:  2001 April
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Also known as direct-drive, drive-point or direct-push, push-driven technology refers to tools used to investigate sites by driving, pushing, and/or vibrating small-diameter hollow steel rods into the ground. Sampling tools can be attached to the end of the steel rods to collect soil, soil-gas and groundwater samples. For purposes of this fact sheet, push-driven technology also includes push-driven equipment that is capable of using an auger tool (similar to that used for a conventional monitoring well) to install pre-pack monitoring wells.

Four Different Cities, Four Different Grants

 Volume/Number:  2000 June
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  The Illinois Brownfields Redevelopment Grant Program offers grants worth a maximum of $120,000 each to municipalities. Grants may be used to perform environmental site assessments, develop cleanup objectives, and prepare cleanup plans at brownfields properties. Municipalities must share in any grant award through a 30 percent match and are required to spend down the grant in three years. As demonstrated by the following four examples, cities throughout the state can initiate and support brownfields cleanup and redevelopment projects that the private sector would not undertake on its own.
