Chief Justice Thomas and Justices Freeman, Kilbride, Garman, Karmeier, and Burke concurred in the judgment and opinion. In 2001, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Wheaton police department, the Du Page County sheriffs department and the Addison police department began a multiple jurisdiction narcotics investigation which eventually targeted mid-level drug dealers in other municipalities.

 Description:  In this Peoria County case, the Illinois Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Christopher Coleman, who was convicted by a jury for events which took place when several men entered a house in Peoria in 1994. He was originally sentenced to consecutive terms of 30 years for armed robbery and aggravated criminal sexual assault. The appellate court affirmed on direct appeal, and Coleman was not successful in his initial postconviction claims.
