The remedial investigation report will be made public around February 1995. A draft final study of groundwater remedies (groundwater feasibility study) will be available for-public comment several months after the release of the remedial investigation report. | | | Date Created: | 05 25 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042504 Original UID: 22015 FIRST WORD: Southeast
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 1995 February | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) investigations indicate that Area 7 was used mainly for disposal of household wastes but also includes a significant amount of industrial waste. Chemicals from this industrial waste apparently are one of the major sources of private well contamination in the Southeast Rockford Groundwater Contamination Superfund Project. The private wells, contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are located west of Area 7, beginning approximately at 25th Street. The IEPA investigated approximately 15 locations, in addition to Area 7, as potential sources for the Superfund contamination. The second fact sheet describes the results of the entire IEPA investigation. The larger map referenced in the fact sheet will be included as a separate pdf attachment. | | | Date Created: | 05 25 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042505 Original UID: 22016 FIRST WORD: Southeast

 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2001 February | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | Illinois EPA investigations show that the main source of contamination in Area 4 appears to have been underground storage tanks located beneath the parking lot south of the building formerly occupied by Swebco. The primary contaminant is the industrial solvent 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA). TCA is in a class of chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They are called volatile because they readily evaporate. They are called organic because they contain carbon. | | | Date Created: | 05 25 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042519 Original UID: 22027 FIRST WORD: Southeast
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2001 February | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | used for both household and industrial waste. Early aerial photographs of Area 7 show evidence of waste disposal and excavation from 1959 through 1970. The area, located north of Balsam Lane in Rockford, now contains a field, wooded areas and Ekberg Park. The depth of contamination varies from four feet below ground surface to at least 29 feet. Illinois EPA estimates that there are approximately 265,000 cubic yards of highly contaminated soil beneath the ground surface. Illinois EPA soil borings show sands, silts and clay to bedrock. Bedrock varies between 35 and 135 feet below ground surface. The water table varies from 36 feet below ground surface south of the park, to 13 feet in the park and 2 feet near the creek. The groundwater flows to the northwest. | | | Date Created: | 05 25 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042520 Original UID: 22028 FIRST WORD: Southeast
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2001 February | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | Area 9/10 has a history of industrial activity extending back at least to 1926 when the Rockford Milling Machine and Rockford Tool companies merged to become the Sundstrand Machine Tool Company. Other industries also have located in the area since that time. | | | Date Created: | 05 25 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042521 Original UID: 22030 FIRST WORD: Southeast
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2001 February | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | Area 11 is an old industrial area dating back to at least 1906. Past industries include Rockford Varnish, Rockford Coatings Corporation and Rockwell International Graphics. Some of these industries have documented use of chlorinated solvents, the main chemicals of concern for the project area. Past surface spills appear to have been the primary sources of Area 11 surface and subsurface soil as well as groundwater contamination. Chlorinated industrial solvents found in the remainder of the Southeast Rockford Project were detected in some Area 11 samples at low concentrations. Non-chlorinated solvents, often associated with petroleum products, however, were found in such high concentrations in Area 11 that the detection limit of the analytical equipment had to be raised considerably. There may have been relatively high concentrations of chlorinated solvents in Area 11 samples, but they may not have been detected because of the high detection limit of the analytical equipment. | | | Date Created: | 05 25 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042522 Original UID: 22031 FIRST WORD: Southeast
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2001 February | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | The contaminants of concern in the Southeast Rockford Groundwater Contamination Superfund Project are mainly industrial solvents in a class of chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). "Volatile" means that they are readily converted to gas (vapor). "Organic" means they contain carbon. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.EPA) are proposing catalytic oxidation as a method of treating VOC vapors in Source Areas 7 and 11 of the Southeast Rockford Groundwater Contamination Superfund Project. | | | Date Created: | 05 25 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042523 Original UID: 22033 FIRST WORD: Southeast

 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2002 May | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | From June 11, 2001 through August 20, 2001, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) held a public comment period on the feasibility study and proposed plan for control of the four major sources of groundwater contamination in the Southeast Rockford Groundwater Contamination Superfund Project. (See the map on page 3.) The Illinois EPA held a public hearing on July 19, 2001, to receive oral comments on these proposed remedies. After carefully considering all written and oral comments, the Illinois EPA and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.EPA) have issued a Record of Decision for a soil remedy and a leachate remedy for each of the four areas. All remedies are the same as proposed in the proposed plan, with the exception of the Area 9/10 leachate remedy. A summary of these remedies follows. | | | Date Created: | 05 25 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042533 Original UID: 22047 FIRST WORD: Southeast
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2003 March | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) plans to sample indoor air in at least ten Southeast Rockford homes in late May or June. Actual sample dates depend upon the weather. At least five of these homes will be in the residential neighborhood near Area 7 and five in the neighborhood near Area 4. (See the map below.) The Illinois EPA collected and analyzed these samples to make sure that underground vapors from the source area are not moving into the basements of nearby homes. | | | Date Created: | 05 25 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042535 Original UID: 22049 FIRST WORD: Southeast
