Iowa Interstate Railroad Train Derailment

 Volume/Number:  2011 November
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  A train derailment on October 7 near Tiskilwa resulted in several railroad cars containing denatured ethanol and corn mash catching on fire and residual materials seeping into the soil. The incident resulted in the temporary evacuation of the entire population of the village of Tiskilwa in Bureau County after the early morning derailment. Some of the cars containing ethanol were breached during the derailment. While some of the ethanol burned off in the fire, an unknown quantity escaped and seeped into the soils putting groundwater at risk. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included in a separate pdf attachment.

Investigation at Markham Illegal Dumping Site

 Volume/Number:  2010 May
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Illinois EPA was alerted by the City of Markham to a tire fire that began on April 1, 2010 at an illegal dump site in/near Markham in Cook County. The 12-acre-plus dumping areas within the site are bounded by 159th Street on the north, Dixie Highway on the east, the Calumet-Union Drainage Canal on the south, and Western Avenue on the west (see map). It appears that various dumping activities have been going on there for many years. Recent inspections by Illinois EPA revealed discarded mobile homes, automobile parts, boats, tires, drums and totes of unknown liquids and solids, other containers with residue of construction materials, unidentified gas cylinders, unknown liquid and solid spills on the ground, swimming pool chemicals and various construction and demolition debris. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included as a separate pdf attachment.

Information from the Illinois EPA concerning the release of contaminants to ditches along and near Mabin and Griffin Streets in Danville

 Volume/Number:  2010 June
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  The Illinois EPA believes that a manufacturer of animal feeds (Double S Liquid Feed Service, Inc.) discharged molasses and fatty acids into a ditch along the CSX railroad line. These materials are delivered to the Double S facility by rail. After being spilled they were washed by rainwater into the ditches where they began to and now continue to decompose. That decomposition process, though not directly harmful to human health, does produce a very foul odor. Violation notices issued by IEPA will be included as separate pdf attachments.

Illinois EPA's Crestwood Sampling Summary: June 2009 Investigation of the Potential Source of Contamination of the Closed Public Water Supply (PWS) Well #1

 Volume/Number:  2009 June 30
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  During the second week of June 2009, Illinois EPAs Office of Site Evaluation performed initial sampling of soil and shallow groundwater around Playfield Cleaners, a suspected potential source of groundwater contamination in the tainting of the Crestwood PWS Well #1, and between the Playfield property and the now sealed well. The purpose of the initial investigation was to examine and define the extent of contamination and its potential effects on the general public. Results of this sampling indicate that there is no current potential for human exposure to the contamination detected and consequently no health threat to the residents of Crestwood. However, additional investigation will be needed to attempt to determine the source and responsibility for the contamination of Crestwood PWS Well #1.
