Illinois Benthic Macroinvertebrate Collection Method Comparison and Stream Condition Index Revision [2004: rev 2007]

 Volume/Number:  2007 March
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  A comparison of benthic macroinvertebrate collection methods was conducted for Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) involving the hand-pick method used until 2001 and the newly instituted 20-jab multi-habitat method. IEPA collected samples in the summer of 2001 using both methods at each site and data analysis showed little dissimilarity between the methods. Using the 20-jab method in lieu of the handpick method slightly increased (2.8%) the discrimination ability of the Stream Condition Index (SCI) proposed in 2000 (Tetra Tech 2000). The SCI developed as a preliminary index, based on Illinois historical data, included only richness metrics. This report was revised in March 2007, based on the November 2004 report of the same name.

Exelon Braidwood Nuclear Facility Tritium Releases and Groundwater Impacts

 Volume/Number:  2006 February
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  While working with the Exelon Dresden nuclear power plant in the fall of 2004, where tritium was detected in some on-site wells, Illinois EPA became aware of the potential for tritium contamination in groundwater at this type of facility. At the same time, the Agency was involved in the pending renewal of the industrial discharge permit for the Braidwood facility. Comments received from the Godley Park District alerted Illinois EPA to tritium detected in a shallow sand point well at the Park District. The printable map mentioned in the fact sheet will be included in a separate pdf attachment.

Exelon Braidwood Nuclear Facility Update on Tritium Releases and Groundwater Impacts

 Volume/Number:  2006 April
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) has been working since late November 2005 to fully discover the extent of groundwater contamination at the Exelon Braidwood Generating Facility. Two violations notices have been issued to Exelon, and the Agency has referred a case to the Illinois Attorney Generals Office for enforcement. Illinois EPA requested significant testing of groundwater near the plant in areas of previous leaks of water that contained tritium. Exelon has installed numerous sampling wells and has tested many private wells in the area. A complete investigation report is due soon from Exelon, and this will be available to the public through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be attached as a separate pdf document.

Exelon Byron Nuclear Generating Station On-going Tritium Investigation

 Volume/Number:  2006 April
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Exelon Corporation operates the Byron Nuclear Generating Station in Ogle County. On February 13, 2006, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) Division of Nuclear Safety notified the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA or Agency) that Exelon had inspected six vacuum breaker relief valves along the three-mile long blowdown line which runs west from the station to the Rock River. The blowdown line carries process water and wastewater from the plant and occasionally tritium. Five of the vaults had standing water in them. The vacuum breaker vaults, which are part of the discharge system, have weep holes on the bottom that threatened the release to groundwater of the standing water in the vaults. No discharges down the line occurred from late January to April 20, when releases down the discharge line resumed. The station is installing leak detection devices at each vault along the line to give immediate notification should a leak occur. In the interim, visual inspections will occur at each vacuum breaker location during each planned release to ensure no further leakage occurs. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included in a separate pdf attachment.

Formosa Plastics Corporation Site

 Volume/Number:  2004 May
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  On Friday night, April 23, 2004, an explosion occurred at the Formosa Plastics Corporation plant in Illiopolis, located between Springfield and Decatur along I-72. Illinois EPAs Emergency Response Unit staff were on site before midnight and began monitoring the air around the plant and in the community. During the weekend and the next week, other Illinois EPA staff worked with the Village of Illiopolis public water supply operator to test and insure the safety of the drinking water supply. Additional sampling was done along an unnamed creek just south of the site property, which continues east to the Long Point Slough and the Sangamon River. Since then, Illinois EPA has determined that a long-term presence at the site is needed in the form of oversight regarding site investigation and proper cleanup of contamination.
