		Description:	Based on the human health threat from exposure posed by the dilapidated, asbestos-containing former school located at the corner of Maple and Monroe in Magnolia, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) will demolish the building and cleanup the site using both Federal and State funding. Due to the condition of this former school, it is highly likely that asbestos fibers are being released to the environment allowing for an exposure to humans. Therefore, this exposure warrants corrective action.

		Description:	Illinois EPA was alerted by the City of Markham to a tire fire that began on April 1, 2010 at an illegal dump site in/near Markham in Cook County. The 12-acre-plus dumping areas within the site are bounded by 159th Street on the north, Dixie Highway on the east, the Calumet-Union Drainage Canal on the south, and Western Avenue on the west (see map). It appears that various dumping activities have been going on there for many years. Recent inspections by Illinois EPA revealed discarded mobile homes, automobile parts, boats, tires, drums and totes of unknown liquids and solids, other containers with residue of construction materials, unidentified gas cylinders, unknown liquid and solid spills on the ground, swimming pool chemicals and various construction and demolition debris. 2405:		Title:	Matthiessen and Hegeler Site

		Description:	Matthiessen and Hegeler is an inactive zinc rolling mill and smelter that operated from 1858 to 1978. The 160 acre property is located on the west side of the Little Vermilion River in LaSalle, Illinois. In December 1993, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) collected soil and sediment samples from the site and from surrounding properties. These samples included three sediment samples from the Little Vermilion River, seven soil samples from the site property, 13 off-site soil samples, and two background samples 1 1/2 miles north of the site. The sample results will be used to make a preliminary evaluation of possible environmental impacts from past Matthiessen and Hegeler operations.

Initial plans for investigation and cleanup of the site were organized by unit, e.g., plant site soils, Interim Water Treatment Plant, Phosphogypsum Stack, Zinc Slag Pile, Lithipone Ridges and South Ditch. As the cleanup plans for the South Ditch progressed, this organization was found to be inappropriate for the complex site and the site was divided into five operable units (OUs) for investigation and remediation. The site was not properly closed and capped, resulting in a 5 to 10-acre depression in the middle of the landfill. This depression collected water, which drained into the landfill, resulting in over one hundred leachate seeps.

Twenty soil samples were collected from residential yards. Three sediment and three surface water samples were collected from Lake DePue and the ditch leading to the lake. Samples were taken as background from Turner Lake and Tiskilwa for comparison. Ten samples were collected from the New Jersey Zinc and Mobil Mining and Minerals site.

These metals have accumulated in the soil of the former New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical site from years of zinc smelting and other industrial processes. The metals are either leached (dissolved) or washed into the water on particles of metal-bearing soil. Occasionally, some of this water has flowed over the Marquette Street sidewalk.
