The Midwest Folklife Festival is a two-day free outdoor public festival that highlights the ethnic and folk arts, customs, and practices of the participating Midwestern states. Each year this family-friendly festival is hosted by a different Midwestern state, and this year Illinois is joined by Minnesota and Wisconsin in presenting their states artists and folkways at the festival. The once bustling 19th century communal settlement of Bishop Hill has been selected as the festival site for 2012 and will provide an exciting location for the festival. The community of Bishop Hill continues to preserve its unique cultural legacy and is proud to again serve as the host for the Midwest Folklife Festival, having played host to the festival in 2006 and 2009.

Mathis recited Silence by Thomas Hood, Buick by Karl Shapiro, and The Gift by Li-Young Lee. Cat Harmon, a senior from Auburn High School, Rockford, won first runner-up with recitations of Ah! Why, Because the Dazzling Sun by Emily Bront, I felt a Funeral in my Brain, (340) by Emily Dickinson, and Rebecca Lindenbergs Carnival. Mr. Mathis will advance to the national competition to be held in Washington, D.C., in mid-April. If Mr. Mathis is unable to attend, Ms. Harmon will represent Illinois at the national contest.
