		Description:	A total of 2,703 (59%) potential Illinois waterfowl hunters returned questionnaires for the 2003-04 Illinois Waterfowl Hunter Survey. The respondents included 2,343 individuals who purchased a 2003-04 Illinois Migratory Waterfowl Stamp, of which 2,108 (90%) hunted waterfowl in Illinois in 2003-04. The hunters reported spending 1,251,974 days afield, an increase of 19% from the 1,054,047 days expended during the 2002-03 license year. The waterfowl harvest increased 29% from 504,616 birds during 2002-03 to 650,906 during 2003-04. Duck harvest estimates were as follows: 285,011 mallards, 48,023 wood ducks, and 153,165 other ducks. A total of 20,453 teal were harvested during the early (September) teal season. Goose hunters harvested 83,207 Canada geese during the regular Canada goose season. Attitudes of hunters toward duck season dates, teal season dates, and waterfowl management practices were profiled, as were waterfowl hunting experience and background information for waterfowl hunters.

		Description:	A total of 2,896 potential Illinois waterfowl hunters returned questionnaires for the 2004-2005 Illinois Waterfowl Hunter Survey, for a 63% response rate. Of those, 2,419 reported they purchased a 2004-2005 Illinois Migratory Waterfowl Stamp, and 2,117 stamp purchasers (87.5%) actually hunted waterfowl. An estimated 54,803 Illinois waterfowl hunters spent 1,083,910 days afield during the 2004-2005 season, and harvested 494,775 waterfowl. September teal hunters (n = 8,097) spent 23,928 days afield and harvested 8,463 teal. Regular season duck and coot harvest, by species, was 207,982 mallards, 44,725 wood ducks, and 116,951 other ducks. Hunters harvested 13,587 Canada geese during the 2004 September season. During the regular goose season, 37,189 hunters spent 345,279 days afield and harvested 81,859 Canada geese and 8,231 other geese. We evaluated hunter behavior and attitudes related to waterfowl hunting, with a particular emphasis on duck season dates and duck hunting.

		Description:	Participant surveys are necessary to estimate harvest during the Conservation Order snow goose hunting season, and overall effectiveness of the conservation program. We selected a random sample of 1,730 goose hunters, and mailed them a 4-page questionnaire. From the original sample, 80 questionnaires were undeliverable, 1,053 were returned (64% return rate), and 1,049 of the returned surveys were useable. The 2005 estimate of 5,689 conservation order snow goose hunters was similar to the estimated 5,976 hunters in 2004. Days afield was estimated at 42,349, and was slightly less than the estimate of 44,306 last year. An estimated 43,839 snow geese were harvested during the 2005 Light Goose Conservation Order season. This was an 18% increase over the 2004 estimated harvest of 37,189 snow geese. Sixty-seven percent of the 2005 harvest occurred in the Central and South Zones during February. We examined hunting activities and tactics of snow goose hunters during the Conservation Order season.

This harvest is 22% greater than the estimated 30,564 snow geese harvested in 2003. Participation in the Light Goose Conservation Order season increased from 3,111 hunters in 2003 to 5,976 hunters in 2004, a 92% increase. Similarly, the days spent afield by snow goose hunters increased 63%, from 27,177 days to 44,306 days. Sixty-three percent of the 2004 snow goose harvest occurred in the South Waterfowl Zone during February. Of the specialized methods afforded snow goose hunters, unplugged shotgun was the most often used, being employed by 67% of hunters. Electronic calls and hunting after sunset were utilized by 62% and 60% of the hunters, respectively.

		Description:	This study was undertaken to determine whether use of recovered sediment as a growth media for garden vegetables promotes the bioaccumulation of undesirable elements in plant tissues. Five plant species, bean, broccoli, carrot, pepper, and tomato, were grown in pots containing either dewatered, aged sediment or a reference soil. Plant growth, development, and yield in the two soils were quantified. Edible and vegetative tissues from the plants were analyzed for 19 elements, including environmentally-important heavy metals and metalloids. Some plants grown in sediment showed a greater biomass and yield as compared to the Ag soil. Elemental analysis of the tissues revealed that only Zn and Mo were elements that were significantly greater in sediment-grown plants on a consistent basis.
