- As Memorial Day weekend approaches signaling the unofficial start of summer and boating on Lake Michigan marine, harbor and United States Coast Guard officials today warned Illinois families about a little-known threat lurking in freshwater. That threat is the potential for electric shock drowning (ESD), and it can happen when electricity from a dock or boat plugged into shore power enters the water.
