- Illinois EPA investigations show that the main source of contamination in Area 4 appears to have been underground storage tanks located beneath the parking lot south of the building formerly occupied by Swebco. The primary contaminant is the industrial solvent 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA). TCA is in a class of chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They are called volatile because they readily evaporate. They are called organic because they contain carbon.
