CHIEF JUSTICE FITZGERALD delivered the judgment of the court, with opinion. Justices Freeman, Thomas, Kilbride, Garman, Karmeier, and Burke concurred in the judgment and opinion. In these consolidated criminal cases, both defendants entered into negotiated plea agreements, were sentenced, and later, not having directly appealed, filed pro se postconviction petitions complaining that they were not informed, as required by law, that they would have to serve terms of mandatory supervised release in addition to their prison sentences.
