  • There is no time when quality health care is more critical than in an emergency, especially in the event when someone has sustained a penetrating traumatic injury (e.g., gunshot wounds [GSW] or stab wound). Trauma centers specialized facilities within hospitals with the expertise to care for these types of injured patients have been shown to significantly decrease mortality.
